SPID for citizens living abroad: quick 2026 guide

SPID is the digital key to Italy's public administration services and, increasingly, to consular portals for Italians living abroad. In 2026 its role becomes even more central: here is what you need to know to activate and use it properly from abroad.

Key points to know

SPID allows Italians living abroad to access Italy's public administration services and consular portals online.

From 2026 SPID, CIE or CNS will progressively become essential to access online consular services such as FAST-IT.

Until 31 March 2026 it will still be possible to use some traditional credentials on consular portals.

Italians living abroad can request SPID also with a foreign phone number.

Documents generally required are: passport or valid Italian ID, Italian tax code, email and mobile number.

It's important to choose an Identity Provider compatible with residents abroad, marked by the "World" or "EU" icon.

Many providers allow online identification via webcam, with no need to physically travel to Italy.

With SPID you can access services such as AIRE, INPS, the tax authority, civil registry certificates and FAST-IT consular services.

SPID users often don't need to provide additional ID documents during some online consular procedures.

The CIE (Electronic ID Card) is becoming increasingly integrated with SPID and with digital consular services for AIRE-registered Italians.
